The Computer
Suggestion for another "trademark" (or distinctive) background element:
What do you think about the computer being a 2d "holographic" image of a human face (with proper photoshop digitizing and such). This "screen" could be projected anywhere in the ship as a crewperson needs. The thing that would make it interesting maybe is that its inclusion in backgrounds only deals with its flat perspective. That means it could be transparent and used anywhere in a given shot (meaning a comic frame) and could be a vehicle for good effects. (overlaying it over characters using it like a filter on the image, or using its ambient glow to light a scene, for example)
I think the Computer should also talk and maybe have a personality of sorts, at least a simulated one.

Sarcastic & abrasive would be good, I like the idea of it being another distinct personality.Baron Saarthuran wrote:

You could also have straight-laced & snooty (think English butler) or overly cautious, verging on timid.
I am sure there is some comedy value here as well.

unless it's one of those cheap scout surplus models
I have always preferred the laid back Scout models, they are relaxed, friendly, and no worries laid back, a friend on long voyages and someone to keep you calm in the face of danger.
And it makes a nice contrast to crew members freaking out man....
