Re: The Worker
This Man, (and he is a man) was selected for the mission due to his experiences at long distance engineering tasks with limited or stretched ship's resources. I see him as a no-nonsense astronaut tech guy, but a belter by trade. A guy who worked more on the larger ore processing ships than on the smaller Seekers.
On a fairly routine trip in a rather aged processor ship, the ship misjumped far off into a stellar void. The effect killed half the crew. The nav array was also severely damaged during the misjump. This man's skill at engineering and being able to improvise parts enabled him to aid in the return of the vessel to Marches space, under some of the most impossible circumstances and three months overdue!
It was also during this long voyage that the Man became very familiar with the tricks of the trade when it comes to fuel cracking and fuel conversion. He is also adept at making the course calculations for the dangerous but sometimes necessary practice of Gas Giant Skimming.
This man is an engineer. He has computer, electronic, and mechanical aptitudes. It is a near obsession with him, and much of his time is spent working on engineering specs on an oversized drawing tablet. His clear and elegant solutions to problems use what is on hand, and are clearly not the work of a mere tinkerer, but of a gifted man of genius.

Re: The Worker
This is good, its good to have an obsessional geek, I see him as quite tough (ex belter) and maybe quiet/introverted (he feels more at home with machines/comps).
I am also glad we have got away from the cute 'Kaylee': (innocent pretty girl but good with a monkey-wrench) type of engineer - been done to death.

Re: The Worker
exactly. This guy is more of a "Service Module Sam" type. We must find a way to break the Kaylee "Quirky" and the "Scotty" model in an engineer. Early model I thought of was the engine room guy in Das Boot. Skilled, but not unshakable/infallible. Maybe a steer away from the "peice of junk" model would be good in itself. The ship can start out nice, and then degrade as the journey goes on. The Journey should be the danger, and the fuel extension system...
